Sandi Vito: An Award-Winning Performance in Labor & Industry

July 25th, 2011

The Department of Labor & Industry saw a remarkable run of achievements as of late, thanks to the efforts of Acting Secretary Sandi Vito. As head of the department, she sought the improvement of the workers’ welfare, including the protection and promotion of their economic interests. Due to her steadfast commitment to build on workforce development, the National Network of Sector Partners awarded her the Trailblazer Award. Pennsylvania Partners also recognized Vito’s efforts providing employment opportunities with the very first Workforce Development Leadership Award. Recently, Vito was bestowed with the 2009 Eagle Award by the National Association of State Workforce Agencies, following her efforts in serving the interests of both the employers and their workers.

Thanks to Sandi Vito, the state’s workforce development system gained prominence in the United States. Pennsylvania itself was recognized as one of the few “demand-driven” workforce states. It has also been chosen by the National Governors Association to work on state policies which could increase access to postsecondary education and training for people. The U.S. Department of Labor bestowed a $3.25 million grant upon Pennsylvania in hopes of boosting raining in the plastics industry. $15 million, on the other hand, was awarded to sustain the state’s Wall Street West program. Capping off the list is the reported invitation from the Obama administration to join the Labor transition team. These are just some of Vito’s accomplishments, and citizens have expressed their confidence that she could add some more during her term. Undoubtedly, Vito has left her mark in Pennsylvania’s Department of Labor & Industry, one which future department heads would be hard-pressed to duplicate.
